Getting around the city:

Driving in San Francisco is not for the faint of heart, and parking is even worse. We suggest that if you have to fly here, you rely on taxis, walking, and public transit.

  • See our public transit system's 511 trip planner. Muni sells tourist "passports" as well that offer discounted rates on buses, streetcars and other forms of mass transit. See the Muni transit website for maps.
  • Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) for getting to/from the East Bay (Oakland, Berkeley), the SFO & Oakland Airports and the Peninsula.
  • Convenient and relatively inexpensive airport shuttles: catch any at the airport, or call Super Shuttle for a reservation (800-BLUE-VAN).
  • Taxis: Yellow Cab (415-333-3333), Luxor, and DeSoto (415-970-1300) are just a few.

That being said, if you don't mind the traffic and bad parking, there are some sites worth driving to. If you'd rather not rent a car for the entire stay, San Francisco has two car-sharing services: City CarShare and Zipcar.
